Snow Country

I do not know why I picked up this book in the first place.  It is possible that the phrase “Winner of the Nobel Price for literature” on the cover was the reason.  It is just a 175 page novel, yet, it took me a couple of weeks to finish it.  The story revolves around three characters; a boy, a girl, and another girl.  You have to wait until page 51 to get to know the name of the girl.  I do not want to give away the plot but initially I was frustrated with the girl and was hoping that the boy would make a move on the other girl.  But when you get to know more about their relationship as the story progresses you realize that the boy shouldn’t make a move on the other girl.  

The whole story reminded me of මලවුන්ගේ අවුරුදු දා even though there is no resemblance between the two stories.  It is an emotional fiction; but a strange fiction.

”චිජිමි හණ රෙදි වියන්නිය", සංචාරකයා, හා "හිම කිරිල්ලී" හැරුනම තවත් චරිත නැද්ද? ඇයි, සංචාරකයාගේ බිරිඳ? ඇය මෙම "ගද්‍ය කාව්‍යයේ" චරිතයක් නොවූවත් ඇය ගැන සඳහන් කිරීම තුලින් සංචාරකයා දෙස බලනා කෝනය තරමක්වත් වෙනස් වන බව නොහැඟෙන්නෙද?  චිජිමි හණ රෙදි වියන්නිය මෙය දන්නා නිසා ඇයම ඇගේ ආදරයට අකුළු හෙලනවාද? ඇයගේ හැසිරීම කියවන්නාට ඇය ගැන කෝපයක් ජනිත කරනවාද? 

සංචාරකයා මුලින් එන්නේ එම සුන්දර පරිසරයට ඇති ඇළුම්කම නිසාය. චිජිමි හණ රෙදි වියන්නිය එම පරිසරය තුල තවත් කුතුහලයක් පමනි ඔහුට. හිම කිරිල්ලියත් ඔහුට තවත් කුතුහලයකි. නමුත් උවමනාවෙන්ම හිම කිරිල්ලිය සොයා යන දා ඔහුට ඔහුටත් චිජිමි හණ රෙදි වියන්නිය ගැන ආදරයක් තිබෙන බව වැටහුනාද?

පරිසරය හා වියවුනු චරිත තුනක ශොකජනක රසයක් ඇති කාව්‍යයකි මේ ගද්‍යයය.

Yasunari Kawabata won the Nobel price for literature in 1968.  Apparently Kawabata “was found dead by his own hand, in 1972”.
