The Life of Buddha

මෙම පොත මුලින්ම මුද්‍රනය කර ඇත්තේ මහනුවර Buddhist Publication Society මගින් 1972 දීය. මෙම පොත මම මිලදී ගෙන ඇත්තේ 2004 දී සියැටල් (Seattle) කිනෝකුනියා (Kinokuniya) පොත් සාප්පුවෙනි. මගේ පොත් රාක්කයක දුහුවිලි බැඳෙමින් තිබූ මෙම පොත දැන් කියැවීමට හේතුව පහත සඳහන් වේ.

මම මේ ලඟදී කියවූ Ali A. Rizvi ගේ “The Atheist Muslim — A Journey from Religion to Reason” නමැති පොතෙහි මෙලෙස සඳහන් වේ. 

… Buddha was born from a slit in his mother’s side. (page 168)

මම කුඩා කාලයේදී කියවූ බුද්ධ චරිතය මට දැන් සෑහෙන දුරට අමතක වී ඇති මුත් මෙහෙම කියමනක් මගේ ජීවිත කාලයේ කවමදාවකවත් කියවා නැති බව හැඟුනු හෙයින් මගේ පොත් ගුලේ බුද්ධ චරිතය ගැන පොතක් සොයද්දී ඥානමෝලී ස්වාමීන්වහන්සේගේ පොත හමුවිය.  

මෙම පොත පිලියල කොට ඇත්තේ බ්‍රිතාන්‍ය ජාතික ඥානමෝලී ස්වාමීන්වහන්සේ (1905 - 1960) විසින් බුද්ධ ජයන්ති නමැති සඟරාවේ 1954 සිට 1956 දක්වා ලියූ ලිපි පෙලක් මගිනි. (ඥානමෝලී ස්වාමීන්වහන්සේ අපවත් වී ඇත්තේ 1960 දී මහව දීය.) එම ලිපි පෙලට අමතර කරුනුත් එක්කොට මෙම පොත ඇත්තටම ලියා ඇත්තේ මහනුවර ආර්ණ්‍ය සේනාසනයක වැඩ විසූ ජර්මන් ජාතික Nyanaponika  මහ තෙර (1901 - 1994) විසින් 1971 දීය. (Nayanaponika —නයනපොනික?— මෙම වචනය මට නුහුරුය.)

නයනපොනික මහ තෙර විසින් මෙම පොත පිලියල කොට ඇත්තේ පාලි ත්‍රිපිටකය ඇසුරින් හා පසුව ලියන ලද පොත් පත් ඇසුරිනි.  එතුමා මෙම පොත සඳහා ඒ මූලාශ්‍ර වෙන් වෙන්ව හඳුනා ගැනීම සඳහා "හඬවල්" (voices) නැමැති ක්‍රමයක් යොදාගනී.  පහත සඳහන් වන්නේ එම හඬවල් ය.

Narrator One: A commentator, or compeer, of the present time, who introduces the others, and who presents a dispassionate onlooker with some general knowledge of the events

Narrator Two: A commentator who supplies historical and traditional information contained only in the medieval Pali commentaries (mainly those of the fifth century by the Elder Buddhaghosa).  His functions are to give the minimum of such material needed for historical clarity and, occasionally, to summarize portions of the Canon itself.

First Voice: The voice of the Elder Ānanda, the disciple and the personal attendant of the Buddha, who recited the Discourses (or Suttas) at the First Council, held at Rājagaha three months after Buddha’s attainment of the final Nibbāna.

Second Voice: The voice of the Elder Upāli, the disciple of the Buddha, who recited the Discipline (or Vinaya) at the First Council.  

Third Voice: The reciter of events that took place actually during, or after, the First Council.  He appears only in Chapter 16 (titled The First Council), and represents a member of the Second Council held one hundred years after the Buddha’s attainment of Final Nibbana.

Chanter: A reciter of certain verses in the form of short epics or hymns in the Canon not introduced with the traditional words of the Elder Ānanda, “Thus I heard,”—එවං මෙ සුතං— or included within the Discipline.

මෙය ඉතා වටිනා පොතකි. මෙම පොත කියවීමට හේතුවූ උගත් රිස්වි දොස්තර මහතාගේ කියමන ගැන කිවහැක්කේ එතුමා මෙම කියමන ලබාගෙන ඇත්තේ විස්වාස නොකටයුතු මූලාශ්රයකින් බවයි. “Buddha from Babylon” වැනි බහුබූත පොත් පිටවන මේ කාලයේ බෞද්ධ පසුබිමක්  නොමැති දොස්තර මහතාට වූ මෙම පටලැවිල්ල තේරුම් ගත හැක.
